Anthem 2.0 Got Cancelled And I’m Angry

Anthem originally launched on February 22, 2019 to initial praise. Within just a few days, however, the game was receiving criticism from all fronts. Many claimed the story and dialogue were incredibly weak for a Bioware game. Others pointed to the lack of substance beyond a few repeatable strongholds once the main bulk of the game was completed. It only took a few weeks for many of us to realize that even the end game was a disaster of mismanaged expectations and convoluted systems. I always believed there was a worthy game in Anthem, and that is why I am incredibly disappointed it finally got the axe.

What Anthem Got Right

First and foremost, Anthem got some of the most important things right about a video game. The sense of movement, action, and content loop was honestly some of the most memorable I’ve had. Many games try and ultimately fail to deliver something truly original.

To this day, my own kiddos and nephews will ask if I have played “the Iron Man game” recently. They saw a few minutes of flight and slamming down into the ground, and it just stuck with them. This is one of the reasons so many gamers were livid at the lack of endgame: they were enjoying the game!

Before I hit the drop rate problems, the inscription conflicts, and the complete and utter lack of endgame vision, I was finding myself getting lost in just running from one public event to another, or getting a fun build with a javelin and running through a stronghold faster. It had a solid hook with nothing on the other side.

So Much Promise

The biggest reason I am angry about Anthem 2.0 or Anthem Next getting cancelled is because building on their solid content loop showed a massive amount of promise. They were reworking systems and updating the UI in a way that screamed “No Mans Sky” comeback.

A community of faithful fans took to twitter and reddit to continually show their support of them game long term. And honestly, that was the most surprising result out of all of this. So few games can garner a loyal audience after such a rocky launch, but many stayed in the corner of Anthem.

Lastly, a solid development company poured a staggering amount of hours trying to right this ship. Reading what really went on in the background just adds insult to injury as so much can left at the feet a few people who were just terrible at leadership and vision casting. So many talented devs wasted not just hours, but years on this game.

A Death Sentence

A real and lingering concern that I know have is… Will anyone attempt a game like this in the near future? Is the hope of a big strange world with mech suits and satisfying combat a complete pipe dream now, as it would be decried as a “Poor Anthem substitute”. Will we romanticize how good Anthem was and sentence any similar project to an untimely death?

The sheer fact that Bioware managed to make a 3rd person game with mech suits feel immersive and fluid is a feat in and of itself. One would hope that someone would buy the rights and property from EA/Bioware and pick this project up where it left off. Unfortunately, it’s probably become a video game pariah at this point.

One also has to consider what this means for the future of live service games. Can anything survive without a truly massive and deep end game? Are dedicated servers and subscription fees a must for games that offer and promise so much potential gameplay? Time will tell.
